A judge was shot dead Wednesday in Mexico’s once booming beach city AcapulcoThis is what local media and the public prosecutor say.

Local press identified the slain judge as Edmundo Roman Pinzon, president of the Supreme Court in Guerrero state, and said he was shot at least four times in his car outside a courthouse in Acapulco.

The southern state of Guerrero is one of the areas in Mexico most affected by violence linked to organized crime, and has seen a series of deadly attacks this year.

Weeks later, armed clashes between suspected gang members and security forces in the state left 19 people dead. Last month a dozen dismembered bodies were discovered in vehicles in Chilpancingo.

Acapulco, the state’s most populous city, was once a playground for the rich and famous, but has lost its luster in the past decade as foreign tourists have been spooked by bloodshed That has made it one of the most violent cities in the world.

Wednesday has the The Guerrero Public Prosecutor’s Office said this in a statement that it was “investigating the crime of aggravated murder against Edmundo N” in accordance with the usual practice of not giving full names.

Wednesday’s killing comes two days after the attackers in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz shot and killed a federal congressman. Representative Benito Aguas Atlahua was a member of the Green Party, an ally of the ruling Morena party. Investigators have not yet publicly identified any possible motive for Monday’s killing.

The judge’s killing comes just over a week after President Claudia Sheinbaum led a National Public Security Council meeting in Acapulco that was attended by governors.

Rising violence, much of it linked to drug trafficking, has killed more than 450,000 people in Mexico since 2006, when the government launched an offensive against organized crime.

Sheinbaum, who took office in October as Mexico’s first female president, has ruled out launching a new “war on drugs,” as the controversial program has been called.

She has instead pledged to stick to her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s “hugs instead of bullets” strategy of using social policy to tackle the causes of crime.

Last year, 1,890 murders were recorded in Guerrero.

Violence in Guerrero reached such unprecedented levels that earlier this year Roman Catholic bishops announced they had helped broker a truce in another part of the state between two warring drug cartels.

In June, at least three politicians were murdered in Guerrero. Acacio Floreswho represents Malinaltepec, was murdered just days after the murder murder of Salvador Villalba Floresanother mayor from the state of Guerrero was elected in the June 2 elections. Earlier this month, a local alderman was shot as she left her home in Guerrero.
